Common Electrical Questions

What is a “short circuit?”

A short circuit happens when electricity flows along an unintended path, usually when a hot wire touches a neutral or ground wire. This creates a surge of current that can trip breakers, cause sparks, or damage equipment. Short circuits are a safety risk and should be inspected by a licensed electrician right away.

Why isn’t my outlet working?

There are a few common causes:

  • A tripped breaker
  • A tripped GFCI outlet upstream
  • A loose or damaged connection
  • A failed outlet
  • Wiring issues behind the wall

Try checking your panel and nearby GFCIs first. If the outlet still doesn’t work, our service team can diagnose and repair the issue safely.

What is a GFCI?

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a safety device that shuts off power when it detects a ground fault—essentially, electricity flowing where it shouldn’t. GFCIs help prevent shocks and are required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outdoor areas.

How do I know if my electrical panel is unsafe?

Warning signs include:

  • Frequently tripping breakers
  • Crackling or buzzing sounds
  • Burning or warm smells
  • Rust, corrosion, or visible damage
  • A panel older than 25–30 years
  • Outdated brands known for safety issues

If you notice any of these, it’s best to have a licensed electrician inspect the panel.

Is it normal for a dimmer to feel warm?

Yes, slight warmth is normal. Dimmers dissipate excess electrical energy, which creates heat. However, they should never be hot to the touch, smell like they’re burning, or flicker under normal use. If you notice anything unusual, let us take a look.

Is it normal for my lights to dim and then return to normal?

Occasional dimming can happen when a large appliance starts up, such as an air conditioner or microwave. But frequent or severe dimming may indicate:

  • Loose connections
  • Overloaded circuits
  • Undersized wiring
  • A failing breaker
  • Utility drop-line issues

If your lights dim often, it’s a good idea to have an electrician diagnose the cause.

When should I consider replacing my outlets?

Replace outlets if they are:

  • Loose or unable to hold a plug
  • Cracked, discolored, or warm
  • Sparking or making noise
  • Ungrounded (two-prong)
  • More than 20–25 years old
  • Not GFCI-protected where required

Updating outlets improves safety and ensures your home meets current electrical standards.

When should I contact an electrician for help?

Call a licensed electrician anytime you notice:

  • Tripping breakers
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Burning smells or warm electrical devices
  • Sparking or buzzing outlets
  • Loss of power in part of your home
  • Electrical shocks when touching appliances
  • DIY electrical work you aren’t fully comfortable with

Electrical problems can escalate quickly, so it’s better to have a professional handle the issue.
